Petroleum County is one of Montana’s smallest and least populated counties, located in central Montana. Its county seat is Winnett, a small ranching and oil-industry town. The landscape is rolling grassland and sagebrush plains. The housing market is very limited, with few listings at any given time — small-town homes may cost $100K-$200K, and large ranch parcels or properties with grazing land may reach $300K-$450K+. Building new homes (land + build) might cost $250K-$400K+, but infrastructure (well, septic, road) adds cost due to remoteness. The county is entirely rural, lacking urban amenities but ideal for ranching or solitude. Nearest bigger towns are Lewistown (~50 miles west).
